Photography Backdrop Size Guide
The right backdrop size depends on your subject, camera framing, floor coverage, and available shooting space. Use this guide before ordering, then confirm the exact width and height shown in the size selector on the product page.
Read the size option before you order
Many Chiefbackdrop product options are written as height (H) × width (W), while some products may list width (W) × height (H). Always follow the H and W letters beside the selected option rather than assuming the first number is the width.

These conversions are approximate. Check the exact H × W or W × H orientation in the product option before checkout.
Three things to measure
- Subject width: Include everyone, posing space, furniture, and props.
- Visible height: Include extra height if you want the backdrop to continue onto the floor.
- Shooting distance: Wider lenses reveal more of the backdrop, so allow more coverage around the subject.
Choose by session type
- Headshots and seated children: A compact 3 × 5 ft or 5 × 6.5 ft option can work when the framing stays tight.
- Single full-body portraits: Allow enough height for the subject plus any visible floor area; 5 × 8 ft or 6 × 9 ft gives more flexibility than a compact panel.
- Couples and small families: Prioritize width for posing space and leave extra background at both sides of the frame.
- Groups, photo booths, and event sets: Wider 10 × 10 ft or 10 × 20 ft options provide more room for people and props.

Helpful sizing tips
- For full-length portraits, choose enough height for the subject plus floor coverage.
- For groups, leave approximately 1–2 ft of extra backdrop on each side when possible.
- If you plan to photograph both vertical and horizontal compositions, choose the larger size.
